“There are many people saying I was disrespecting Cote, but this is absolutely not true. My game plan since the beginning was fight five rounds, inducing him to commit mistakes and capitalize on that during the first three rounds and look for the knockout during the fourth and fifth rounds. It was working, and the biggest proof of that is that I almost didn’t waste any blows. I connected with a couple of good punches and knees, but unfortunately he got hurt and the fight was over. This is not my fault.”

Thoughts on UFC 90 here, here and here Unfortunately you cannot predict the value of PPVs before you buy them, but if I could have my $40 back and erase that show from my memory I would do it. Hard to blame Cote for his knee buckling, but he was clearly out classed and the fact that he lasted until round three doesnt really mean anything. Thiago Alves is pretty damn awesome though GSP/BJ Penn etc should probably be worried.

Approaching BLACKOUT......

SIX PACK OF QUESTIONS

Is Elite XC going under good or bad for MMA?

Luke: Competition is good for the sport when it is legitimate, but I don't believe Elite XC ran a tight ship and thus never really competed with the UFC for fans. They overspent on overhyped talent and cheated their fans out of some great fights. I think that there are some outstanding fighters that will leave Elite XC and go on to make big names for themselves in other organizations, most notably Jake Shields, but for the most part Elite had a roster of has beens, could have beens and should have beens; please step forward Ken Shamrock, Phil Baroni, and Ricco Rodriguez. Kimbo Slice, whether he deserves the blame or not, symbolizes everything that was wrong with the company and why it is not here today. Is he entertaining? Yes, but he is not an MMA fighter and the company was built around him, so that says it all. Losing Elite XC is a net plus for the sport. All the good fighters will find themselves in organizations like the UFC, Affliction or Strikeforce and do much better for themselves as a result.

Butch: Tough question because the more organizations putting on shows usually results in better fights, shows, and overall is good for the sport. EliteXC had a lot of good talent, but never put together the right match ups or properly promoted their fighters. Most of their fighters will sign with Affliction to have non-exclusive contracts. A couple of guys will head to the UFC and some will be forced to sign with a regional promotion and fight their way up. Overall, this is not good for the sport because their is less competition for the UFC and will discourage other investors from creating new promotions.

Does Women's MMA have a future?

Luke: As long as they can pump out fighters that look like Gina Carano there will be money to be made. Unfortunately, women who fight for a living are usually not attractive, sorry ladies but it is true. I think Gina Carano or Kyra Gracie can probably find themselves slotted on a card in any organization, but as far as a belt system and consistent matches, I don't think there is a future.

Butch: Right now there are not enough fighters to create distinct weight classes. I think whoever signs Gina Carano will lock her up long term and sign her opponents to 1 fight deals. She will be featured on undercards because she is cheap and attracts fans. Dana White said he has no interest in women's MMA, I think Affliction or a Japanese promotion will pick up Carano.

Bisping wants to fight Anderson Silva before he retires, how long until he is ready to get a title shot?

Luke: Certainly his win over Leben bodes will for his future in that division, but I didn't like his comments that he fought for a decision victory. As a fan or a fight promoter, that is the worst thing you want to hear come out of a fighters mouth, especially one who wants a title shot. I think 185 is the right division for him, but it remains to be seen how well he can do against the likes of Travis Lutter, Nate Marquardt, Rich Franklin or Dan Henderson. Based on his performance against Leben he is not on their level. If he beat Rich or Dan in the next six months I'd say give him a title shot right away, but I'd rather throw him our against Lutter or Marquardt first and then see how he does, so the timeline is at least a year.

Butch: Bisping has a couple of fights to go before he gets Anderson Silva. He is scheduled to be the next coach of TUF and will face either Rich Franklin or Hendo. He has to win that fight and possibly face both of them at 185 before facing Silva. In the meantime Silva will move up to 205 and work his way towards a title shot and go back to 185 for Bisping in a year or so.

Do you believe Luke Cummo?

Luke: I think the fact that 10 cent wings were involved says it all.

Butch: I am more concerned with Luke's past couple of losses. He needs to bounce back ASAP or look for a new promotion.

Best MMA Nickname?

Luke: Gotta go with Dwayne "Bang" Ludwig, guaranteed to sell tickets anywhere.

Butch: I'll go with Matt “The Law” Lindland especially since he is running for office.

Is Patrick Cote ready to pull off the upset of the century?

Luke: I think he has some heavy bombs, but the guys who have given Spider the most trouble are guys like Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson. Stand up bangers like Franklin, Irvin and Leben tend to get worked, so no I don't see the upset happening.

Butch: I think it is highly unlikely that Cote will follow in the footsteps of Matt Serra and "shock the world". Silva hasn't lost since New Year's 2004 (not counting the Okami DQ) and that was via submission. Cote will try to stand and bang with Silva and that has never worked.

UFC/Affliction Agree To Not Be Friends

MMAWeekly.com is reporting that in late September the two sides met to see if they could come to an agreement on ending their dispute over apparel and fight promotion. Affliction would produce apparel for the UFC, while ceasing fight promotion and the UFC could sign the available fighters if they wanted. Things went south, expletives were throw and respective challenges of manhood exchanged, you know the usual sort of stuff one sees in the boardroom. More details are here

Nobody has a plan for Nick Diaz

I don't even no where to go on Kimbo Slice....he's got marketability, but he was taken for a ride by Elite XC and he needs to join an organization where he isn't expected to carry the load. Consequently, he needs to take a pay cut, fight tougher opponents and accept an under card roll to start. That's what he should do if he wants to get his reputation back, earn respect of other fighters and set himself up for a real big payday.

Bisping Was Impressive Saturday

Checkout the actual fight statistics here. Definitley a solid win for him, but I agree with most of the critics out there when I say he still needs to rattle of more significant victories, before he can even be considered for a shot at Anderson Silva. A victory over Hendo would certainly help, but if I am Dan Henderson I see no need to fight a guy like Bisping. I say give him Travis Lutter and see what he can do? If Luttler wants to be back in the UFC he needs a marketable win and he needs someone he can prove his physical stamina against, which is Bisping in a nutshell.

Mayhem Miller to retire?

“I got plenty of money. I don’t even care. I just do it for fun. I love fighting, but I’m just doing it for fun. I don’t feel like doing it right now, so I’m not going to do it. There’s no need. There’s no need for me to fight, so I’m just happy to have lived such a fun career inside of MMA, so if it ends now, it was fun.”

Shocking the guy was awful in the cage and the only thing worse than his performance was that the dude who beat him was only slightly less terrible. Rumble Johnson vs. Kevin Burns rematch at the TUF 8 Final....hopefully justice will be served

This guy thinks Kimbo losing is bad for MMA? Personally, if I was NBC sports I would just fire him right now, but then again I guess some people care about other people. Kimbo, the backyard brawling street fighter represented every single negative stereotype about the sport of MMA and he was only bringing the the sport down. His marketability was somewhat good, but he was mostly just a cartoonish character who lacked any substance and he took press away from the people who worked so hard to get the sport where it is today. The bottom line is Kimbo appealed to the same mouth breathing freaks who enjoy dog fights or witnessing the occasional back alley dust up after the bar closes. These aren't the people that can be sold to advertisers, which will drive the sport to bigger and better things so good riddens.

Elite XC HEAT Preview

Main Card

Heavyweight Bout: Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock[3]

-Luke: The is no doubt in my mind that Shamrock is going to get smashed into submission by Kimbo. Shamrock is over the hill and has been for years. His last fight was an absolute joke and I see this one being more laughable than that one. Kimbo Takes It.

-Butch: Shamrock's only chance in this fight will be to take Kimbo down before he can throw a punch and get a leg lock. However, I know Bas has been training Kimbo on his sprawl and leg lock defense. I suspect Shamrock will take two punches, go down, and the fight will be called when Kimbo pounces. Shamrock will cry early stoppage, but we all know he is done.

Welterweight Title Bout: Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley

-Luke: This has fight of the night written all over it. Shields has been rolling through everybody the last two years and Paul Daley is the Cage Rage Welterweight champ, so expect some fireworks. I am going with Shields here because he has just owned this division for two years and could probably would be seeing a shot at GSP if he was in the UFC right now.

-Butch: Daley is a hot headed trash talker from Britain that is out to prove he belongs. Shields will look to take this fight to the ground where Daley struggles. Daley has much better striking and will look to block take downs and go for a highlight reel knockout. I think Shields will get Daley down and sink in the rear naked choke to end this fight in round 2.

Heavyweight Bout: Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy Nelson[4]

-Luke: Arlovski in a one sided TKO here. Nelson is just too fat and out of shape to hand with legit heavyweights. It is one thing to dominate the IFL, but you fight the big boys you can't be a lard ass.

-Butch:As much as people want to say Nelson is a bar room brawler and too fat a la "Tank", I think people will be surprised by his cardio and ground game. Arlovski looked impressive in his win over Rothwell, but Nelson isn't a one trick pony. Nelson will look to take the pitbull down, use his weight advantage, and go for a submission. The plan sounds great, but things will changes once Arlovski punches Nelson. Look for a knockout in round 3.

Women's Bout: Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobald

-Luke: Carano is the favorite no doubt and I'll stick with her in this match up. Definitely looking forward to seeing her fight Cyborg in the future.

-Butch: Carano barely made weight and might be drained. However, I expect her to handle Kobald. Probably in a unanimous decision.

Middleweight Bout: Benji Radach vs. Murilo Rua

-Luke: Even the Rua is suffering from injury issues over the last 12 months I like him better than Radach, who hasn't beaten a top notch guy in the past two years. I think Rua takes it and begins his road back to a title shot.

-Butch: Rua will continue his winning ways with a submission.

Don Frye IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

According to Frye, he is sober and ready to fight anyone, just not in the UFC

Affliction Clowns

“I was disappointed, yes,” he told MMAWeekly.com. “That was supposed to be my fight. We talked about it at some point prior to going to Japan, and I found out that I didn’t get the fight while in Japan. I continued to work on some business there, especially after I found out I wasn’t getting the fight.”

- Josh Barnett on losing the Arlovski fight to a fat guy, article here

It is good for Affliction that they partnered with Golden Boy/Trump from a financial perspective, but as far as the ultimate product for fans, I am not convinced it will be the best outcome. Basically the t-shirt salesman used the excuse of Barnett being out of the country to explain his absence from the show this Saturday. Truth of the matter is communication around the world is seamless at this point, in fact, I Blackberry message with people in other countries on a daily basis so to say they couldn't get in touch is ludicrous. Secondly, I agree with Barnett not taking the Fedor fight in January, because you need a set fight camp and training regime for that fight. Everything for Affliction is so last minute and unorganized right now that you can't just say "Be ready to fight in January.......maybe" to a fighter of Barnett's caliber. So it will probably be Arlovski/Fedor in January, which is not a bad match up, but it is far from the fight the masses are demanding. Remember how well Fedor did against Tim Sylvia, another fighter dropped by the UFC.

Shogun vs. Coleman Set for UFC 93

The first match(above) at PRIDE 31 ended with Shogun popping his elbow and a nice brawl in the ring afterwards.........

Hmmmmm Yeaaaaaah

"I never thought of myself as a Top 10 guy in any weight class -- ever," Trigg said. "But I think I match up very well against Anderson Silva. I think my style, my technique, matches up against Anderson Silva better than, say, Dan Henderson or Travis Lutter. "

Is TUF worth the trouble to real star prospects?..........I don't think so, why not get paid in Elite XC, Affliction or a Japanese Production and establish a rep while making decent cash? Unless you are a top collegiate wrestler which the UFC loves than you get a good shot at making cash right away....retarded
